1. I have created an image file of my C drive on my D drive. Is there a
way to copy this image file onto DVDs?

2. Also, how do I create a startup disc to read the image on my D drive
in the event that Windows won't load?

I have Version 9.

You need to tell Acronis to make DVD size image files when
you do the backup or you will end up with a single huge file
that can't be burned.

Click (on the top bar) Tools/Options/Default Backup Options
/Archive splitting and select the size for DVD. Or select
"set options manually" when you do the backup.

Click on "Create Bootable Rescue Media" in Acronis.
I select the "ISO Image" option and use Nero to burn
it to CD. I don't know what you do if you don't have
any CD burning software.

There are free CD burning programmes out there:

http://www.cdburnerxp.se/

This one will do DVDs as well:

http://www.burn4free.com/

I think that's probably enough.

I assume I'll then get several *.TIB files each small enough to fit on
a DVD.

1. Do I simply copy each onto a DVD using Nero?
2. Do I have to make the first disc bootable in Nero and will there be
room on the disc to do that even with the *.TIB file on it?
3. How do I perform a restore from multiple DVDs?
4. Do I need to have an operating system installed when I do the
restore or will the first *.TIB file on the first DVD contain a watered
down version of the restore program?
5. Will the restore process automatically multi-span?

Sorry for sounding dense, but the help file isn't very helpful on the
subject of backing up to and restoring from DVDs, and it's a risky
business.

yes

yes
I would have data verification turned on to make sure
the DVDs are readable.

No, that is what the "rescue disc" is for. You boot the
rescue CD you made previously. The rescue CD has
everything needed to restore the hard drive.

> 3. How do I perform a restore from multiple DVDs?

The fist disc you insert is the last volume. From
then on Acronis will tell you which disc to insert.

You don't need anything at all on the hard drive to do a full
restore. The hard drive can even be a brand new drive,
never used drive with nothing on it.

> 5. Will the restore process automatically multi-span?

It's automatic once it gets going. All you have to do
is change the discs when Acronis tells you to.

It's pretty simple. Just make sure you are able to boot
the rescue CD and the DVDs are readable. You should
try it once just for practice.
