Backup software with auto removal of old backups - possible?
|

| Hi there,
We have a PC backing up automatically to another USB drive each day. To make
things easy we just use Nero Backup to make a copy of all the files (10GB
worth) to the USB drive each day.
However, after time, unless we go in and manually delete the older backups
there is no automatic removal of the older backups so eventually the drive
becomes full.
Is there a way around this that does not need any manual intervention, or is
there some better good value software that will do the removal.
Cheers

Nero has the option to keep "X" number of full backups.
Check file, options, job. Looks like that should work.

EMC Retrospect offers a feature called "grooming" that might be what
you want. This is a new-ish feature for Retrospect. A defining feature
of Retrospect is "progressive backup." If you combine this old feature
with the new "grooming" feature, you get a *very* powerful backup system.
It is working quite well for me.

Hmmm, sounds good, but my version does not seem to have that.
I'm using Nero Backit Up scheduler and the "about" says v 1.2.0.18
What version are you using?
Thanks.

| See Backup4all too (http://www.backup4all.com). Thing is you could optimize
both the space occupied and the time to perform the backup by using
incremental or differential backups. And this program has an option to limit
the number of stored backups (and eventually merging them) - see
http://www.backup4all.com/screensho...wizard-type.gif to make
an idea on what can be configured.

| Take a look at our backup tool - DoubleSafety
(http://www.doublesafety.com/).
It has a very flexible functions on removing old backups. You can
remove old backup files on a monthly, daily or hourly basis. And you
can set the program to store a number of backups. Of course, old
version removed only after the new backup has been successfully
created, so you can be assured, that you always have a backup copy.
DoubleSafety costs 39.95$. We will be glad to give you a special
discount as you switch from Nero BackItUp.

| Many people use AJC Directory Synchronizer to synchronize just files that
have changed to their USB drive.
It has an archiving facility so that files overwritten on the USB drive will
be stored and you can get back to any old version of the file. This archive
is very compact because it only stores the changes to the file each time.
It also has an auto purge facility to stop it taking up too much space with
very old data.
Please read more here:

If you need any more info please email support and I would be happy to
advise you.

| OK guys,
Thanks for all the input. So now I am trailling both backup4All and Acronis
True image.
backup4all looks good and feature rich, however Acronis also seems to have
good tools for making partition images which could also be useful (but
perhaps weaker on the standard backup tools).
Thanks again and any more input is welcome.

| Take a look at AutoSave, by V-Communications (now owned by Avanquest). I run
it on my laptop and it backs up every file that changes, moments after it
changes, to a drive on the network. It would do the same to a USB drive if I
used that. I have it set to keep the last five versions of every file, so
you can restore previous versions as well as the latest. It runs in the
System Tray where you can see its status and activity, but it is transparent
to the user. After you set it up you do not need to do anything, ever,
unless you need to restore a file (or files). Only when I have a lot of
programs running at once do I notice a small slow-down or hesitation if
AutoSave is backing up at that moment. You can set the priority for CPU
cycles that AutoSave gets, you can change the delay after a file changes
before it is backed up, and you can set it to back up files and folders by
any criteria. You can select the folder(s) to be backed up, or the file
types. You can exclude any files you wish not to be backed up (like the
paging file). There is no conflict with Norton Personal Firewall or Norton
Antivirus (or with ZoneAlarm, which I used to use). I have used AutoSave for
many years and have never lost a file due to something it did. We also use
it on our office PCs, because there is no interaction required by the user.
See http://www.v-com.com/product/AutoSave_Home.html for details.

Gene

| AJC Active Backup does this also and it costs a bit less. You also get a
built in diff tool so you can see exactly what has been changed in each file
between backups.
It is also very compact because the archive only stores the changes to the
file each time.
