I like to check to see that the original files are not corrupted before I
back them up over older ones, so I use a program that does a comparison
between the old and new versions before I copy the newer 'changed' version
over the older one. If the dates are the same but the CRC check or binary
comparison is different, then it is just as likely that the new file is
corrupt, as it is that the back up is. I keep two backups of important stuff
too.
