Hi, I'm trying out NTI Backup Now and quite like it except that it
gives you very little information about what it's doing. EG right now
I've asked it to run a fairly big backup and I have no idea whether
it's actually running or not. On the job list it just says "Ready",
not "running" or anything, in Task Manager NTI Backup is not listed in
the Applications list, there are various things in the Processes list
that are probably NTI Backup, but these always seem to be there
anyway.

Does anyone know: is there ANY way of knowing whether it's doing a
backup now?

Thanks very much.

It came free with my machine. I unloaded it along with several other items.
I did try it once, and while I don't remember the details, it definitely let
me know it was running, and of course the hard disk ran non-stop.

I use two different backup programs. One, and the easiest is Karen's
Replicator, a free program, that maintaining duplicates of as many folders
as you set it up for. They are not compressed, and can be accessed at will.
It runs in the background and is virtually invisible. I back up all my key
document folders every hour this way, and maintain yet another set of
duplicates to which it backs once each day. You can set as many different
schedules as you wish. Except for a few manual jobs, you never have to
interact with it again.

Then, since neither NTI or most other backups create a true recoverable copy
of your system. I image the entire hard drive with Windows on it to an
external drive every day. I keep seven days. It runs automatically in the
background. But Acronis True Image is not free. If you have Vista, you
really want Version 11, and it sells for around $40. It can be the whole
works if you wish, because it can also create file backups like Karen's
Replicator, but they are copies, not replicas.

There are dozens of quite good freeware offerings around if you spend some
time searching. Both of these should be, but may not be required to install
as Administrator. Don't need to deal with privileges after installation.

I hope this helps.
