Yesterday there was a post on the Retrospect support forums from a user
lamenting the quality of support on those forums. I contributed a
general agreement, praising Retrospect's architecture and design, and
bemoaning the apparent death-spiral in which Retrospect finds itself
since being bought by EMC.

That entire thread is now gone, which I assume is censorship. I'm
posting a copy of this message to the forum, and I expect that this post
will be deleted also.

Is this any way to treat people who LIKE and WANT TO USE the product?

Last January's Channel Register article
http://www.channelregister.co.uk/20...trospect_eight/ pretty
much confirms that Retrospect is dead. That is extremely disappointing,
because even with all its implementation glitches it's still the best
SOHO backup package out there.

Does anybody know of a backup package that has incremental backup
characteristics similar to Retrospect?

This is very disturbing - how dead is dead?

I do a monthly Ghost image backup and a nightly retrospect
backup. If you figure out what program(s) come closest to
Retrospect (difficult as it is to configure), please post.

An EMC employee named "mayoff" responded to this matter on the
Retrospect forum. I for one believed what she said. The OP violated
the rules of the forum, and Retrospect is not dying.

Or even those who despise it and still use it...? -)

Jim,

What does are the things you like most about retrospect? What are you
looking for?

Did you ever check out ION?

has any company ever announced they have a dying product, and you should
switch to a competitor?

I'm not Jim, but the thing I like most about Retrospect is it's
ability to browse all the backup versions of a file and pick the
one or ones I want to restore.

Maybe "like" is the wrong word bc I mostly despise the product
for it's miserable, arcane UI - even though I use it....

I guess "must have" is a better term than "like" and as far as I
know, Retrospect is the only game in town that has that feature.

FWIW, back when Retrospect was a Mac-specific product that ran
off of a floppy I would say that it had a truly-elegant UI.

Dunno what happened to it when they ported to Windows, but it
sure did go downhill in a big way.

Acronis True Image in the ONLY image-based backup of which I am aware that
does true incremental.
I gave up on Retrospect a few years ago and switched to image based backup.

Also, see
http://forums.hardwareguys.com/ikon...ST;f=13;t=4573.

I know of no reason to use file based backups, especially as they are much
slower than image based backups.

Howard,

Please consider the situation where someone has used your favorite
image backup software to protect a certain computer. Then the disk
drive inside that computer fails completely. If the user replaces the
failed disk drive with a different model disk drive, would the user be
able to safely restore all data onto the new disk drive?

If I replace a disk drive, I rarely swap in an identical unit. Unless
the drive dies very young, there are always better drives available to
buy.

With Acronis, can you bring up a list that shows all the
incremental versions of a given file and then pick the version
you want to restore?

I forgot to mention, I do not like Acronis, but it is the only imake based
backup, of which I am aware,
that offers ALL the functions I need.

Acronis gives you a list of all the backup archives, then you choose from
which archive to restore.

So its all-or-nothing then? i.e. there's an archive for
12/19/2007 and if you choose to restore, everything on the target
drive gets back-leveled to 12/19?

No.

You can select the files to be restored,
