What is the trick to get True Image 10 to save multiple image backups to an
external drive?
My goal is to have it create new image backups on a schedule without
deleting the previous image backup. And to delete the oldest backup when the
disk becomes nearly full. Or do I have to tell it to save x numbers of
backup images?

You set up a backup location and assign a size to it. Then you specify how
many backups it should save before starting over. It seems to always do one
more than that before actually overwriting.

The backup location is not the same thing as a secure zone, so spend a
little time with the help file.

When you are doing this, you will have a chance to set a file name for the
backups..... Don't just accept the default. That's about as tricky as it
gets.

Good luck

That last should read, don't assign a name, accept the default.....

Looks like my mistake was not setting a size. I have "location size quota" &
"Maximum number of backups" & "Storage period limits" UNCHECKED. I figured
ATI would just use the entire external drive up.
So if I intend to use this external drive for ONLY ATI backups and it's
160GB what size do I put in the field? Do I have to enter a maximum number
of backups? If so do I do the math and guess how many will fit? Looking at
the "Backup Rules" now it says one OR the other. So I suppose size is the
one field I need to set????
At home I do backups manually and the unchecked settings have not kept me
from having multiple backup images. My problem is with a computer at work. I
will make the changes you suggest.
Thanks for the help.

You are welcome, for what little help it is. I don't use that feature, so I
am not very expert with it. I understand that is is essential to set both
limits. You can pretty well figure the backup file will be about 80% of the
disk contents, not the disk size, and then set a limit that won't exceed the
size. I don't think there is any reason you cannot use virtually all the
disk, but if you don't sent a max number, it does not recycle. You will just
keep getting more backups till the disk is exhausted. I am not sure what
will happen then.

On the other hand, I was assuming you were making one backup and then
incremental. If all your backups are full backups, you don't need the count,
just the space limit. It will, I understand, begin deleting the oldest
backups once it needs the room. The count is for the maximum number of
incremental before a new full backup.

As a matter of practical experience, I have never needed to go back more
than two days for a backup, so I make one full one each day of the week with
a separate task and name the file for the weekday. When it gets to seven, it
begins overwriting one at a time, and I always have a weeks worth of
backups. I only make full backups this way, and there is no need to set a
"Backup Location" just a folder to hold them as files. It takes only a few
minutes to set up each task, and I have been doing this since version 8 with
complete satisfaction.

You may have better use for the disk space than a lot of ancient backups.
Think about it, and good luck.....

Thanks again for your help. The computer in question is my bosses at work. I
need to have it do a weekly backup (night) with no user input. It is mainly
for a catastrophic hdd crash and not so much to back up certain files. The
external drive was purchased for this purpose. Because I won't be monitoring
the backups often I have to trust that all is well and that I have several
backups to choose from should something bad happen.

The system I outlined would work just dandy for that purpose. As I said,
there is little incentive to go back too far, as too much data is lost.
Would your boss be happy restoring more than a week's work, or a month's?
The tasks will run automatically at night with no supervision, and you will
have five or seven days of backups all the time. No hassle, and no worry.
As always, it's your choice.... Good luck.....
