Author Backup Exec 11d: How does one create additional free space in a Backup-to-Disk backup?

I am running a backup using Symantec Backup Exec version 11d. When I
create a backup to disk directory and a media set (using Symantec
Backup Exec version 11d), and then run the back up, the backup will
pause and give this following error message:

"The Backup-to-Disk device is out of free space.

Either create additional free space on the disk volume where this
Backup-to-Disk folder resides, or go to the Job Monitor and cancel the
job.

Respond OK after performing one of these actions."

How does one create this needed additional free space, so that the
back-up can continue? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
