Remote cdrom changer

| We are looking to 'attach' a cd changer in an office to a server in
our datacenter. This will be used to copy cd data to a SAN. I have
heard this can be done, but don't know how. Can anyone point me in the
right direction? Can we use FCIP or iSCSI to do this?

Are you trying to copy data off CDs to a SAN disk or are you trying to
create a SAN-attached CD-rom drive?

We currently have a proprietary solution in place that copies cds to
harddrives with no intervention. We are looking to move away from that
solution to blade servers fibre attached to a SAN. So we are looking
to either have a remote cd drive attached to the server or to the SAN.
Basically, we want the cd copying to be as quick as possible and with
minimal impact on the network without having to run to the datacenter
to mount the cds like we do now. (We're lazy - the datacenter is in a
different building than our office.) Preferably we would like it to be
a cd changer, but a single cd/dvd would be fine.

| You may consider taking a look at the StarWind/StarPort solutions of
ours at www.rocketdivision.com. These are iSCSI target/initiator and
can be used to resolve the task you describe.

Uhm, no.
A SCSI-based jukebox or single drive and a scsi-fc bridge would, though.

What's the problem with just using a ROM drive on a handy PC with a
fibre connection to the SAN?

We could just use a cd in a PC, but we are trying to make this lower
maintenance. We want to have a dedicated unit (pc or attached rom)
that is little maintenance. The machine would not be used for anything
besides the copying of cd's to the SAN. We will be handing this
process over to those who are not that technically savvy.

Sure. He said "minimal impact on the network" and apparently already has a
SAN - moving traffic to the network using iscsi (since i'm assuming he's
not going to set up another network for that) would pretty much counter
that point.
