Dear all,

I'm currently looking for a (cheap) alternative to replace our current
SAN. During my search I've found multiple (mostly 1U) raid heads and
would like to hear your opinion on those product, errr I mean solutions.

I'm especially interested in the products from infortrend,
chaparral/dothill and JMR. From what I've seen these products look like
'miniature' SANs, at a much cheaper price.

- Infortrend EonRAID 2510FS (cheapest I've seen, 12 total ports, dual
controller offered for under EUR 14.000)
- Chaparral RIO RAID 288 (I've found no price, 8 host and 4 disk

ports, those are rebadged by Xyratex)
- JMR Galeforce S-1021 (8 hosts and 4 disk channels, dual 1GB cache

controllers @ EUR 26.000)

I'd configure them to use an active/active setup, with two dual drive
channels, with 5x 16 disk FC JBODs RAID10 for the databases and a single
16 disk SATA JBOD RAID5 for disk2disk backups.

Our scaenario involves few DSS/DWH-DB servers, all of them Solaris or
(possibly) Linux based. We've no need for fancy features (like
replication over long distances, superfast snapshots, etc.)

Has somebody got experience with the aforementioned (or similar)
products? I'd be most happy to hear from you experience.

Cheers,

Jochen
