We use Legato in our SAN Environment, HP Tape Library Borcade Switches

EMA12000 and EVA5000 Storage.

Our problem is that the tape media will be marked full, but they arent´t
really full.

2) The following entries in the daemon.log on the Networker Server are
visible

29.04.2004 00:12:51 nsrd: media warning:
rd=nsrrat1.host.magwien.gv.at:\\.\Tape2 writing: unknown error 1111 (0x457

), at file 32 record 14402

29.04.2004 00:12:51 nsrd: media warning: \\.\Tape2 writing: unknown error
1111 (0x457), at file 94 record 713

29.04.2004 00:12:51 nsrd: media notice: sdlt tape ANB424S on \\.\Tape2 is
full

29.04.2004 00:12:51 nsrd: media notice: sdlt tape ANB424S used 161 GB of 101
GB capacity

29.04.2004 00:12:51 nsrd: media warning: \\.\Tape3 writing: unknown error
1111 (0x457), at file 71 record 2468

29.04.2004 00:12:51 nsrd: media notice: sdlt tape ANB484S on \\.\Tape3 is
full

29.04.2004 00:12:51 nsrd: media notice: sdlt tape ANB484S used 82 GB of 101
GB capacity

29.04.2004 00:12:51 nsrd: media notice: sdlt tape ANB463S on
rd=nsrrat1.host.magwien.gv.at:\\.\Tape2 is full

29.04.2004 00:12:51 nsrd: media notice: sdlt tape ANB463S used 45 GB of 100
GB capacity

3) net helpmsg 1111 translates the error with "Der E/A-Bus wurde
zurückgesetzt."

4) in the Eventviewer of the hosts there are no entries

5) In der Knowledge Base of Legato there are two possible solutions

5.1.) Problem with the Blocksize of the tape

Solution is to change on the storage nodes the
"NSR_DEV_BLOCK_SIZE=128" --> that was no solution

The Storage Vendor (HP)

5.2.) To change the parameter "Reset TPRLO" to "2" on the Fc card on our
hosts

All two solutions had no effect, the problem already exists.

Are there any ideas?

Regards Peter

I would start by looking at your FC switch and find out if any LIP events
are logged. Also check if you have your zones properly set so no other
machines can try to talk to the tape drives while being used

I have seen similar errors in different environments. The first question
to ask which I didn't see a definitive answer in your post, what OSes are
zoned to see your tape library? There is a known issue with Windows
Server 2003 where you _must_ start and stop the RSM service (even if its
disabled). This is a problem with the Windows OS which we were told would
not be fixed until SP1. The next step would be to verify with HP you are
in compliance with their SAN Checklist for Tape libraries. Things like
OVSAM, Insight Manager, and LT&T could also be causing problems.
Basically any sort of "tape monitoring" tool that probes the library at
will should be disabled. It took us a few weeks to narrow this down, we
ended up just zoning out hosts and adding them in a few at a time. Hope
this helps.

A tape can also be full in NetWorker when the media is bad, for example, you
can have a DLT IV tape (80GB compressed) be full at 31MB (!!!) because the
media is bad. I also see that some of your tapes are full over the
capacity?

You got some decent storage capacity out of this tape (am I to assume you're
using DLT IV tapes?)

I seem to recall also getting this error in NetWorker 6.1.1 on Windows2000,
also on SDLT drives. When that happens, NetWorker marks the tape as full in
the media DB and moves on to the next tape. I believed that the error is
caused by unexpectedly reaching the end of tape?
