Hi group

I have been recommended by some folk on alt.comp.hardware.homebuilt to visit
here with this question because there are some real experts here. So here is
the original question

"Can someone explain why a Compaq HDD shows up in Windows (my computer) and
the bios on my Caompaq Ipaq --desktop as 10gb, but in device manager the HDD
is shown as a 6L020J1.

The actual drive is a Maxtor D740X 6L020J1which according to various google
searches is a Maxtor DIAMONDMAX PLUS D740X 20 GB 6L020J1

Even if I run Partion Magic 8, it still only shows up as a 10gb drive.

How do Compaq cripple their drives. Is there any way I can get the full 20gb
from this drive

Even the Compaq part number (253453-001) appears in google searches as a
20gb drive"

It would appear that there are various scenarios

The missing 10gb has the Compaq backup / restore stuff on it

The drive is a warranty replacement that has be downgraded to meet the
original spec

Other points to note

The BIOS on the Compaq Ipaq can take at least a 40gb HDD because I have used
one init.

The Deskpro that the above crippled HDD came from is now running with said
40gb HDD. Neither Deskpro or Ipaq have had the bios flashed.

Is the drive really crippled and if so is there a way to get the lost space
back?

Thanks for any help you folk can offer

Thanks in advance

Duncan
