First a few words so that I would have found this article while
investigating this problem if it had existed at the time. In my most
recent tests dd was reading back files from the tape with the correct
size but containing only zeroes. That is with block sizes of at most
104k (106496 bytes). Once the block size reached 106497 it read back
the file contents, too.

The solution was simple: put the tape (dlt7000) on a separate scsi
controller and not on the megaraid controller.
