Linux as BU server?
|

| I have an old company Dell PII laptop that has Window 2000 on it. I dont
have the password and want to use it as backup server to run some external
HDs.
What is the cheapest way to get a fresh OS install so I can have full
control of the PC?
Is Linux cheap to buy as OS and will it look and feel close enough to
windows that I could use it efficiently quickly?
thanks!

How much do you value your own time?

Download and boot Knoppix live CD. You don't have to load the OS to try it out.
If you like it, then you can install Linux. If not, run Windows.

You can reset the Administrator password with a boot floppy from
http://home.eunet.no/~pnordahl/ntpasswd . It works well to delete the
Administrator password. Then when you log in you can change the pw to
something else. I've used it a number of times on 2000 and XP and it works
great.

Linux is free if you download it and make your own CD's. I'm downloading
Fedora Core 3 ( fedora.redhat.com ) as I write this. It is not that close to
Windows to use it efficiently quickly if you've never used Linux or Unix
before.
Good luck,
Steve
