Hitachi 9520 questions

| I recently acquired an HDS 9520V RK with no drives
installed. I purchased some 72gb drives for the unit and would like to
install it as part of my test system, but the default IP address has
been changed. When I ping 192.168.0.16
I get no response.
Does anyone know the procedure for resetting the address to the factory
default?
Is there a CLI that I can use for basic config, or will I need to
install Hi Track to config and manage the unit?
Should I be looking forward to other problems?
Thanks for any help!

| Hey Tim,
I haven't actually had any hands on with the -20, but I have used most
of the other older and newer HDS midrange arrays. You picked the one
I don't know... but I'll have a go at this anyway...

That's unfortunate.
Where are you going to get the disks from? ICBW but I think HDS still
use a funny sector size (516 or 520 byte) so you'd have trouble
getting standard disks to work.

It was certainly the case on other systems that the settings are held
in an EEPROM and I think there are DIP switches on the main controller
board along with a button you need to press. I have a manual
somewhere that should have this information - I'll dig it out
tomorrow. Whatever you do, don't go playing with the DIP switches to
try to find the right one!

No, there isn't a CLI as such. You need some software called DAMP
(Disk Array Management Program - poor choice of acronym, I know) and
if you didn't get it with your array, you might have great difficulty
in getting hold of a copy.
DAMP is normally licensed by HDS, but it would have been sold with the
9520, so maybe you could speak to whoever gave you the array.
You don't need HiTrack. This only monitors the array status and
reports back to HDS when it finds something wrong. It's not used for
configuring the array.
However, HiTrack on the 9900 and USP models is much more
sophisticated.
>Should I be looking forward to other problems?
Other than getting suitable disks and a copy of DAMP, no. They're
pretty solid little arrays.

| The drives I have are from a 9960...so I should be OK there.
DAMP could be another issue. I've got a lot of HDS CD's around,
so I'll have to see what I have. Most are labeled HiTrack and HiSource
and came in with 9200 systems, but I'll do some looking.
Would Santricity (LSI) manage this thing?

Following on from my previous post... the reset info isn't in my
manual. Sorry! I appear to have binned the older manuals which did
have that info.

Maybe... you might have problems if they're formatted for mainframe
use. Just a hunch, more than anything. Are the carriers for the 9960
drives the same as for the 9520?

If you find an old version of DAMP (for a 9200) it's worth a try...
but you will probably lose the port virtualisation features -
something that I suspect isn't really of much interest to you.

No chance!

| The drive carriers are completly different, but my 9520 came in full of
drive blanks, which can be used to re-mount the drives.
I'm at an offline storage and testing facility, so I can play with the
drives
in 9980 / 9960/ 9520 enviorments. Drive format should not be an issue.
I'm wondering if resource manager for one of the larger systems might
see this unit?
I guess my big issue will be resetting the IP address.
Thanks for the assist...I'll post more as I move forward with this
project.

AFAIR microprogram and array configuration data for Thunder (95xx) is
stored on first disk group (first 4 or 5 disks) - so there is big chance
that this array is not even booting properly (you can verify this by
locating READY LED on front panel and checking, if it lights some time
after powering on)

you probably need to get at least 4 compatible disks, microcode CD, then
using (included) maintenance manual (re)install microcode

as others already mentioned - disks should use HDS firmware (and I don't
know if disks from 9960 are compatible - 9520 is (mostly) SATA array,
and even if it uses FC disks in base unit (as it probably does - but it
is not clearly stated), they are only 146GB ones, maybe with special
firmware (?) - HDS claims that those disks are special ones for 95xx
SATA arrays - but maybe other disks will also work(?))

All the 9500 systems that used SATA in the first tray of disk still
had to have 5 x FC disks to boot from. HDS sold them at the same
price per GB as the SATA disks. That's the only thing that's
'special' about them.

| Hi all,
if the maschine have no disks installed, you
probably have no microcode installed.
You have to do a "initial setup" (disruptive!), I think.

| Hi Ruediger,
You are correct, I'll need an "initial setup"
My big problem is setup instructions, (IP address reset, ect.)
and getting the microcode itself.
This system will be used for testing parts only and will NEVER
see production or maintenance again.
Any help from out there would be most welcome!
Thanks,
Tim
