I have a dell branded ax100, w/ three host servers, the two w/ the most
data are netware and one small ms 2k3 box. I have the dual controllers
on the ax100, along with a brocade 8 port switch. I also have a pv
132t ( adic scalar 24 ) Has anyone had experience backing up the ax100
over fiber. What i have set up now is scsi attached to a server and
then that server mounts the snaps to backup and i'd like to avoid all
that who-ha and just let the drive get it from the ax100. Any ideas,
thoughts or comments?

Thanks
matt

Sounds like you're currently using a NAS solution.

Unfortunately, I don't think the ax100 is capable of this. NAS servers
are often able to back up directly to a server using NDMP based
backups. However, AFAIK, the ax100 does not have this capability.
Disk-arrays (as opposed to NAS systems) don't often have this feature,
because they do not have access to the filesystem on the disks, and
therefore, cannot catalog the files.

Incremental snaps (or checkpoints) are also a filesystem function on
many NAS systems, this functionality would not be available without
some third-party software running on the host.

In my experience, the cheapest and easiest backup strategy on a SAN
attached disk-array is a typical LAN-based backup solution like Legato
Networker or (since you're using Netware) CA's Arcserve. Other,
fancier methods exist, but are most often price prohibitive for a small
environment.
