I'm seeking advice about the pros and cons of using hot-swappable hard
drives for large capacity data backups vs. using tapes.

The scenario is a small business with a snowballing amount of digital
assets. They need to store and backup about 1TB of data. Nightly backups
would be ideal, but they might be able to do weekly backups. An automatic
tape changer is probably not an affordable option. The data also needs to be
archived for long-term storage.

Which is a more reliable medium for backups and archiving? Hard drives or
tapes? What's the trade-off in terms of usability?

Many thanks to anyone who wants to weigh in on the subject.

If you need archival storage disk is not an option. You can run daily
backups to disk and dump them to tape without the need of a loader - 1
TB is 2 tapes at most. Regarding reliability, disk drives are more
reliable than tape drives, but tape media is more relaible than disk
drives. As for usability, D2D is easier, but you'll still need a back
end using removable media, so the total configuration gets more complex
than simple tape backup.
