Does anyone know if the CX300 requires the Supplemental Power Supply? The
documentation seems to imply that you must have the SPS in order to do write
caching. I understand it provides battery-backed power for cache destaging,
but our datacenter is fully UPS protected so I don't want to waste money if
it's not necessary. Thanks.

I have a Clariion CX300 as well and it wasn't an option to not have the SPS
units. I can't imagine you'll save a lot of money dumping them if EMC
permits that. In regards to the cache flush I think only the SPS units can
initiate that.

The reason you want two power supplies for "safe" write caching is not to
protect against failure of the building supply, its to protect against
failure of a power supply in the CX300 which a building UPS doesn't help
with.

You need to have the SPS to enable the write cache without them you
will lose your data if the CX loses power. Do you already have the
CX300 if not I would recommend the FC4700 cost less and is a better
option in my opinion. Good luck let me know what you choose to do
Good Luck
