Our Compaq DLT7000 drive is dead and we need to purchase another
drive. I can't seem to find any 7000 or 8000's that are new...all
I've found are "refurbished" which I'm leary about. We have an
archive of DLT IV tapes that we need to be able to read with the new
drive...we'd also like to keep using our DLT IV tapes for the backups.
What are my options? Is the DLT VS80 a good replacement? Specs on
that drive seem slower then the DLT7000 we currently have. We'd also
like to keep it under $1,500. Any advice would be appreciated....or
even a reliable online store that still carries new DLT8000's.

The VS80/VS160/VS4 series is different from the DLT4000/7000/8000 series.
Go to www.quantum.com and look carefully at the specs and ability to read
older formats.

It looks like the VS80 can read the DLT4000 format but not the DLT7000/8000
formats. The VS160 can only read the VS80 format and the VS4 can read
only the VS80 and VS160 formats.

The only drive that appears to be able to read all the DLT4000/7000/8000
formats is the SDLT320.
