Author reading an lto1 tape on an lto2 tape drive?

Hi - I upgraded the tape drive an LTO1 (Overland) to an HP LTO2 tape
drive. I was told that I would be able to see the LTO1 tapes on the
drive.

I inserted the LTO1 tape and catologed it but the catalog failed.

Is there something I need to do? The tapes are 2 years old so they are
no longer on the job list. I am using Backup Exec 9.0 at the moment.
