DIY 1TB+ RAID NAS?
|
|

| Hi all!
I've been Google'ing the net a bit, searching for a NAS that has the
following specs:
* 1TB+ storage available
* RAID1 or RAID5
* quiet!
The prices I came across were a bit steep though... Isn't it easier to
build one myself? But I guess for RAID5 I'd need a quiet barebone that
can contain 4x SATA... Not that many of those available... or are there?
Anyone here who has any suggestions?
Regards,
Evert

| I have a simple Linux box with 5 x 250GB SATA disks in a software RAID5
and shares via Samba... Works a treat.

| Do you use a standard Linux distro, or a specialized one, like FreeNAS
( http://www.freenas.org/ ).
What kind of hardware? I'm in need of something small & quiet...

Check out the Infrant ReadyNAS boxes. They can hold four drives (that
you can buy and add yourself) and cost about $600 (last I checked). We
have one and it works pretty well. 4 400GB drives would give you about
a TB of RAID5 storage. For a total of around $2100 you could have 2 TB
with four 750GB drives. One of the best things about them is their
support. A very active BBS that actually gives very quick response to
problems. I had trouble expanding the array from 3 to 4 drives and
within a very short time they sent me a Firmware/OS upgrade that handled
the situation. The box runs Linux and soon (so they say) there will be
ssh access to it. Now it is just httpd for administration.

How small? 1- or 2-U rack? Or like an SFF PC case?
How quiet? Quiet enough to use in the same room as a pro audio mic?
Or quiet enough for espionage work?

| The Infrant products look very interesting! Thanks for the tip! :-)

Shoebox size...

I can not mention anything about my MIVD activities here, so I think
I'll go for something that makes the same/less amount of noise as a
Shuttle PC40 (
http://global.shuttle.com/Product/A...pec.asp?A_id=28 )
PSU.

I have found no Shuttle product that is quiet enough to use in a music
studio.
The quietest production off-the-shelf case and PSU I have found is the
Antec P-150 -- NOT the Antec Sonata.
I don't know of any SFF cases that you can actually put 4 drives into
without heat problems (means noise), or hacking in the mountings, or both.

There's some special custom-cut foam inserts for the Sonata that are
supposed to quiet it down further; see www.quietpc.com for info.
What you really want is the Zalman TNN (Totally No Noise). Completely
passive cooling with no fans, but kiss your wallet goodbye.

And still pointless if you don't go with solid state storage.

Buy a PC with a ATA RAID adapter!?
The PC box can be modificated to become very quite and ATA RAID
adapters such as 3ware.com offer a wide range of storage options for a
moderate investment. Especially compared to buy a prebuilt NAS box.
Then share the storage with Samba/Windows CIFS.
