I jut found out that there is a bootable USB device called OPEN-E, that
is a "SAN IN A BOX". It basically boots on a bare-metal server, allows
management of the drives, and allow you to set up a ISCSI TARGET server.
I am getting a demo disk. I understand that several vendors are using
this as their "FRONT-END" systems. No bootable O/S. Looks very
intriguing. Anyone used this? www.open-e.com

I have been using NIMBUS MYSAN here at work for about 2 weeks. It does
work well. I know it is missing features, but it has allowed me to
share a 2 TB SATA Array on a Windows box. I use it for low-priority
scratch data. I back it up to my corporate data RAID.

we have been using this, and some of the other DOM (disk in module)
products to turn appliances (PCs disguised as storage) into NAS & iSCSI
target storage devices (as do a number of our competitors)

not bad, good features but not as fast as some of the iSCSI RAID controller
/ hardware based iSCSI products
