There are basically two things to do :
1. Install a good iptables based firewall (you might have to recompile your
kernel). Search for Oskar Andreasson, iptables on Google.
2. Shut down all the non-essential services. For instance, you are not
running a webserver, uninstall apache and close port 80 in the firewall.
After this, you can go to many websites (GRC Shields Up, PC Flank, etc.)
which allow you to test the firewall configuration. If you are stuck, you
know where to ask questions
