Probably an ignorant question

| I went to the debian website, and was going to DL the ISO in preparation to
install Linux on a computer I bought.
I've never DL'd it before, and noticed they had about a dozen flavors of the
distro to correspond with whatever computer you owned. (Eg, Alpha, PowerPC,
etc.)
There were none labled "PC" (ie what we used to call an IBM Clone -- what's
commonly used by Windows.).
Windows 2K does install out of a file on their cd labled "I386", and the old
stealth upper / high memory program had a program called "I386".
Am I correct in assuming that the ISO's under "I386" are appropriate for a
PC?
Thanks in advance for your help.

Basically, yes. When being taken literally the term "PC" is quite
generic...
Info about the different hardware architectures and Debian's support
can be found at

Debian uses the term "i386" for the Intel x86 / IA-32 architecture,
this includes 386, 486 and the Intel Pentium variants as well as their
AMD / Cyrix / Transmeta / ... counterparts like for example Athlon.
[ This flavor will also run on the AMD64 (Opteron) but won't use all
the extensions. For the latter there is a special port in development,
see the Debian Ports Page at <http://www.debian.org/ports/> for further
info. ]
Cheers,
Flo
