I use both Slack and Debian and find the above statement a little strange.

Debian stable is a misnomer. Its practically prehistoric. Sarge is stable
enough for me.

Debian Sarge has existed for the past year or more. The OP does not have to
wait for anything. The new installer makes installation a breeze.
