Author DVD iso for Sarge for download?

Hi all,

I have been trying to download the dvd 3.1 for sarge
but have had no success (I do have a high speed
connection). Is it possible to do this? If not what is
the easiest way to get BitTorrent to work from the
client side? I downloaded/installed the client for
linux/bittorrent but it did not put an entry in any of
my menus (the rpm version on CentOS).

thanks,
charles.....

I, too, had a problem, and asked about it in a recent thread, but there
was no reply. Eventually I got the first DVD using BitComet on XP.

Can anyone point me to the contents of the two CDs?
I may not need the second one because I don't need the source code
(if that's what it contains).

This newsgroup seems very low traffic.
The equivalent Mandrake newsgroup is has loads of posts.
I wonder why? Is this a new newsgroup?
And is there a better source of help, such as a web forum?

The easiest way to get images is:

Is there an easy to read and understand guide on how to
download/install/set up jigdo? Most of the how-to's in
linux from my perspetive are written by and for programmers
and "real people" have a very difficult time getting over the
learning curve required to get anything meaningfull accomplished.

It is a sad day when a linux problem is solved with a Windows(r)
solution.

When someone wants to move from Windows to Linux he often uses Windows
to download a Linux distribution - don't you think?

Interesting, Russ. However that *does* put yet another barrier in place
for someone wanting to go from Windows to Linux. Straightaway you have
to learn a new downloading method, before you even start learning Linux!

Do you reckon that Debian is aimed only at those who are already Linux
experts? Would it be better to learn Linux using Mandriva and then
migrate to Debian after a few years?

The problem with that, though, might be a lot of time wasted because of
slightly different ways of doing things in the different distributions.

Jigdo is very easy to use. It is simply a download manger. You give it
the URL of the jigdo file and let it go. How hard is that?

Debian is my first distribution after migrating from WinXP. I'm now
working on a Stage 1 Gentoo install. Then again, I ENJOY learning &
experiencing new things. Some people thinks it's adventurous to eat
venison. Ho-Hum. I've been there. Ever eat camel? That's the kind of
person I am.

Isn't every car slightly different? You have to learn where all the
controls are, right? Isn't every house different? Bathrooms are in
different places, right? Life is about learning. Get over it. If
everything was exactly the same, then life would be very boring.

Jigdo is not that hard. Download it, install it, run it, give it the URL
of the jigdo file, wait for it to download it and and just keep hitting
enter (default answers) until it starts downloading. When it's done,
you'll have an ISO. Then, burn it and boot it.

Back up your documents and anything else you want to keep and just go
for it. So what if you break it. You get to keep both pieces and try again.

Yes, there is a steep learning curve with Linux. It is not easy, but
nothing in life that's worth doing is easy. Well, except maybe sex.

It sounds easy - and I will try it.

Sounds good to me. I, too, enjoy learning.

Agreed. I am in sympathy with your sentiments.

This is usually the pattern, yes.

Yeah the sex is easy but it's the cr_p a guy has to put up with to
get the sex that is difficult. >joke>

This newsgroup was created on 26th August 2004. I agree, the amount of
traffic here is quite low compared to other similar groups (though it's
been picking up a little lately).

Chris> And is there a better source of help, such as a web forum?

The mailing-lists are pretty good, and some are very busy. Your news
server may carry them - they're of the form linux.debian.*. They are
moderated (I think you have to be subscribed to post).

Otherwise, you can access them on gmane.org (again moderated).

The Debian user mailing list (debian-user@lists.debian.org is not moderated
and you do not have to be subscribed to post. I believe that you do have
to be subscribed to post through the mail to news gateway (which is not
operated by Debian).

Go to <http://www.debian.org/MailingLists/> to subscribe. You can read the
mailing list archives at <http://lists.debian.org/completeindex.html>.

Neil - thanks very much for your informative reply - much appreciated.
I prefer a newsgroup like this to a mailing-list because the threading
and filing is better - and also because I don't want to publish my email
address because of spam.

This newsgroup being so new it's not surprising the posts are few.
I'll keep watching and waiting for it to pick up.

Hi Charles,

I'm sorry, I can't help with the iso.

I was just wondering. Why are you using the dvd instead of the net
install cd? http://www.us.debian.org/distrib/netinst

You could have a full working system in less time than it takes to
download the dvd images.

Just wondering.

Good luck either way,
Steve
