Author knoppix question.....

is there a newsgroup that help folks with knoppix. i just dont like the
forum support @ knoppix.net or any support that is "forum" based.

i have the following issue. i downloaded and burned a knoppix boot cd.
when i boot from the cd, the boot process goes until i get the following
message displayed

"scanning for harddisk partitions and creating /etc/fstab"

then the system hangs. once the system hangs, i cant even eject the
knoppix cd from the drive. the cd rw/dvd is a sony ht-d-st rw/dvd gcc-4480b.

any ideas what may cause this. i thought knoppix did not need an hdd to
boot.

im new to any unix. but i have had enough of spyware/malware with M$
products and operating systems. so i want to try out unix/linux and
knoppix seemed to be an easy way to start learning the unix o/s.

im running with an intel thrasher mb, celeron 3.0 ghz processor, 768
megs memory, ati 9200 128 mbyte video card and a 80 gig western digital
hdd that is formatted with ntfs and currently runs xp professional with
all the upgrades applied.

i have a bunch of question on how to reparation a ntfs hdd and install
knoppix on a hdd partition of it own. but first id like to boot knoppix
and see what it looks like and acts like.

any help would be greatly appreciated.

There's the debian-based Yahoo group:

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/debian-based/

Not very active at the moment though.

You thought correctly. Knoppix shows you your hard drives, though.

It's too bad your first experience was a failure. Your questions show that
you have admirable persistence. There are a lot of reasons for a live cd
to fail to boot, including your particular mix of hardware or a bad
download/burn. I suggest that you download several more live cds (don't
forget to checksum them) and keep trying until one of them works. Then you
can get on to your questions.

Bob,

A possibility is that your boot parameters are causing some kind of conflict
during the boot process -- not necessarily hard drive-related.

You may want to try the F2 and F3 options to see what other choices there
are, or there is a full list of them at the knoppix.net web site. I picked
up a copy of VMware and now use Debian through it (work computer -- has to
be XP), but I have been dual-booting into Knoppix 3.6 for some time, and
found that some boot option selections didn't succeed for me.

thank you, thank you and thank you again.

i gave up on knoppix until i was ready to unsubscribe to this ng this
morning and seen your message, coupled that along with what a coworker
told me to try and bang, knoppix booted. my problem was i didnt know how
to enter the NODMA at startup until you mentioned the F2/F3 option.

this is no lie, i threw the knoppix cd away on saturday. so i re burned
it this morning and i used the f2 option with the nodma parm and knoppix
booted.

i was surprised that mozilla worked and my dsl service. i tried to play
a song from my xp partition and it played on xmms, but the volume was low.

i hate to say this, but i looks and acts like m$ windows. it was easy to
get around. i really like it.

now i need to find out how to repartition my drive and make knoppix
bootable from my hard drive. i guess a dual boot machine is what im saying.

thanks again. im off to play with knoppix and start reading. i need to
find info on building a dual boot machine. i guess i also have to join
the FORUM based support group that i dont like but...

The biggest difference is that you can go on from there and make
it vastly better than Windows.

Hi Bob,

I'm so glad you were able to get things working!

On the volume with xmms -- that's something I've played with before, too. If
you go into the menu and locate KAMix and start it, it will create an icon
like a speaker on the kicker (the taskbar equivalent). Right clicking on it
will give you options, while a left click will let you adjust the volume.

I believe there is a utility for repartitioning your drive (you might search
freshmeat.net for it). Also, there are instructions for installing knoppix
to a hard drive on the knoppix.net web site. I've never done a knoppix hard
drive install, but have instead downloaded the debian ftp install (sarge)
and let it install to my hard drive partition, and have done the equivalent
with SuSE and older Slackware versions.

Good luck!
