| almost forgot, how do I properly shut down debian ? to completely
power down the computer. Sorry for my ignorance, but it is confusing.

shutdown
halt
poweroff
init 0

From Gnome:
Actions>Log Out>Shut down
or from terminal:
shutdown now -h
