I was looking for the canonical way to start KDE instead of Gnome
under sarge. See page 150, Chapter 9, _Tuning a Debian system_. The
file /usr/bin/kde2 does not exist on my system. Use of startkde or
kdeinit in .xsession results in many, many .xsession-errors.

Looks like the version of the reference you read was written for Woody
(KDE2 has been replaced by KDE3 in Sarge). There are several ways to
change the window manager or desktop environment, either per user or
system-wide:

1. install a login manager like KDE or GDM - you can choose there
whether you want to use KDE or Gnome

2. The xsession system uses system-wide defaults if you don't have your
own ~/.xsession. You can use

# update-alternatives --config x-session-manager

and select KDE instead of Gnome - if you use xdm or run startx, KDE will
come up

3. Use ~/.xsession - if you have problems here, post your .xsession and
what errors you get

best regards
