I have worked with several Linux's (Slackware, LFS, SuSE etc.)
I am now starting with Debian. I am using Sarge.

I have got a Debian to start up to X, in Gnome. How do I switch to KDE?
Further making a mistake in the X configuration, how do I correct this from
the X screen. (I got the mouse port wrong and couldn't find a way to
correct this)
Also how do I set the X config out. I would prefer to go to command line and
then enter startx.

Last but not least, how do I know what is what groups. For example I want to
use cdrecord. I try apt-get install cdrecord or apt-get install cdrtools
etc. and it doesn't know what set to get. Is there a list I can use?

Thanks.

I don't use Gnome, but is it not possible to choose in GDM? It is in
KDM and XDM.

In an xterm, as root, dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86. It might be
easier to switch to a console (CTRL+ALT+F3). Either way you'll need to
restart X.

Disable or remove GDM, KDM and XDM.

I don't understand the question. What do you mean by groups and sets?
"apt-get install foo" ought to install the latest version of foo
available to you. Perhaps there's a problem with
/etc/apt/sources.list?

OK I am working my way through GDM. Thanks.

What I mean by the package or set, is that I wish to install KDE, what do I
use after the install in apt-get.
What I really am looking for is a sort of list of the possible packages os
sets. I have tried "apt-get install kde" and apt-get returns saying that it
can't be found.

You could use aptitude (`apt-get install aptitude`) as a nice frontend to
the apt-system.

Can you tell me how I set up Gnome (Sarge) so that it goes straight away
into KDE (or whatever). I am using the standard Debian /Sarge) setup and
selecting WorkStation (and Mailserver) as the packages to be selected. Are
you manually selecting the packages?

Even when I remove the Gnome (and GDM) packages and install the KDE packages
I still can't get KDE to start at all. Gnome comes persistently back.

However it is all starting to go rather well and I am starting to get used
to its ways. A few hints may speed up the process.
Thanks.

I use dselect during installation for manual package selection. I
don't trust the new installer yet.

Removing the gnome package won't necessarily remove any of the Gnome
components on which it depends. Try using dselect or aptitude or
synaptic to remove the packages that form the Gnome core.
