Author alien: .deb creation doesn't work

I tried to use alien 8.46, but it doesn't work on any RPM. For those who
don't know alien: It converts RPMs to debain packages.

I even tried it on the alien RPM itself. One would suspect that it should
work. But I get, as with every RPM:

markus@linux:/tmp> sudo alien alien-8.46-2.1.i586.rpm
Package build failed. Here's the log:
dh_testdir
dh_testdir
dh_testroot
dh_clean -k -d
dh_installdirs
dh_installdirs:
make: *** [binary-arch] Error 1
find: alien-8.46: No such file or directory

But there is the newly created alien-8.46 directory.

A google search did not reveal anything. Thanks for every hint!
Markus

P.S.: This goes to alt.os.linux.suse and alt.os.linux.debian because I am
trying to use alien on SuSE 9.2 (the alien RPM is from
ftp://ftp.gwdg.de/pub/linux/suse/ft...46-2.1.i586.rpm)
