Howto change behavior of dynamic entries in /etc/fstab

| I notice that there are both 'static' and 'dynamic' entries
in /etc/fstab.
The problem I'm grappling with affects 'dynamic' entries
that come and go, for example, when I 'hotplug' one
the 'memory stick' drives into a USB-port.
For example, someone correctly suggested that if the fstab
entry for a memory-stick had the modifier
umask=000
appended to it, then it would auto-DISMOUNT for the
user (who may not have root privs).
Ok. But, the issue is that you can NOT just use a text-editor
on the entry in /etc/fstab and append the desired modifier.
Because, on the next REBOOT, or even after unplugging and
replugging the memory-stick, the entry in /etc/fstab is entirely
removed.
So, the question becomes: Is there a template somewhere, or
a way to coerce the system to create certain classes of
dynamic entries with one's desired modifiers and attributes?
Maybe it's just a 'man' page somewhere that I need to read!?
TIA...

I don't use hotplug, but man hotplug seems to give some of the answers
you're looking for. See near the end where it mentions templates.
