Keyboard problems in XFree

| Hey,
I've recently installed Debian 3.1 (Testing) from a net-inst ISO,
installed xserver-xfree86 v4.3.0.dfsg.1-10.
I'm Danish and thus would like Danish/European charset support, but I'm
having difficulty accomplishing this.
I've read about how to modify 'inputrc', removing the comment from
# set convert-meta off
This give the desired effect outside X, but in X (using GNOME Window
Manager from recent 'testing' binaries) it doesn't work.
I've also reconfigured my system locale to 'da_DK', and changed my
keyboard layout (XKbLayout) in /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 to 'dk', keyboard
type to 'pc105'.
Also, rebooting has been tried, without any changes.
Any suggestions? Anything you need to know to help?

Try "Desktop Preferences : Keyboard" from the Gnome "footprint" menu or
gnome-control-center.
