| Is anyone on the list on top of the problems surrounding the notorious
error message:
Error activating XKB configuration.
Probably internal X server problem.
X server version data:
The XFree86 Project, Inc
40300001
You are using XFree 4.3.0.
There are known problems with complex XKB configurations.
Try using simpler configuration or a newer version of the XFree software.
If you report this situation as a bug, please include:
- The result of xprop -root | grep XKB
- The result of gconftool-2 -R /desktop/gnome/peripherals/keyboard/xkb
I was attempting to install a new keyboard map in
/etc/X11/xkb/symbols/pc. At first I got the message but was still able
to switch between keyboards from "Keyboard Preferences" and the applet
on the tray. Now I can only switch keyboards by this method logged in as
root and as user I can still issue:
setxkbmap <desired_keyboard>
I have not attempted to install xorg on Debian, so no problem there.
Naturally I've set everything (that I know about) back as it was before
my attempted keymap install.
At one point I was told that the X and Gnome configurations did not
match and I had to decide which to follow.
The end of /var/log/XFree86.0.log reads:
