Debian 3.1 r0a -- is this not the current "stable" release?

| Hi all,
I've just downloaded the binary-1 Debian 3.1 r0a CD ISO[1] and burnt it
to CD and then had a look on the CD \README.txt file which says:
"
Last-Minute Notes
=================
* You should keep in mind that this is an unofficial CD of the
current development version of the Debian system. This means that
all sorts of bugs may be present anywhere in the system.
"
So have I _not_ downloaded the current "stable" release[2]?
TIA!
Peter.
[1] MD5SUM of said ISO image is:
b49a7955be5e286eff873a9bd157793a *debian-31r0a-i386-binary-1.iso
[2] I _am_ a Debian newbie.... so it is entirely possible I am being
very dumb somewhere along the line... make no assumptions!!

This is an error in the Readme file. The version you downloaded is the
current stable release.

NOTE: This is the kind of error the Linux and especially Debian files
are *full* of. Documentation is NOT updated in a timely fashion and
frequently not at all. What are we poor users to do? Experiment? (That
is really cost effective!)
