Author Install via network? Or work around for CD-ROM DMA issue?

Hi all,

I'm trying to install from the Debian 3.1 r0a binary-1 CD but having
problems. The machine I'm installing on is an ancient AMD K6 166MHz:

* Motherboard: TMC TI5TT
* CPU: AMD K6 166MHz
* RAM: 64MB
* Video: Matrox Mystique (4MB I think)
* Network: BayNetworks 10/100 PCI network card

There's also an old modem ISA card and Sound Blaster 16 ISA card in
there, but neither are being used.

I'm testing installation on an old 2.5GB Seagate drive. That works fine.
My problem is my CD-ROM:

* CD-ROM: Creative 36X mx

When I try to install, its asks my language and keyboard setup, and then
tries to detect the CD-ROM drive... which it then fails to find! The
same problem exists when I try to boot using a Knoppix (3.4) CD, but I
can get around this using the "nodma" cheat-code. I have tried "nodma"
and "ide=nodma" with Debian, but neither seems to work.

I've also tried using an old Samsung DVD-ROM which works except the
drive is very very flakey and always has an IO error before the install
is complete!

So, my question is:

1. Is there anyway to get the Creative CD-ROM to work (e.g. can I
disable DMA like I can with Knoppix), or

2. Can I install via the network (e.g. using a small Floppy based
loader, or even a CD based one... assuming the Samsung DVD-ROM will work
well enough to load something small!).

It would be ideal if the network install could run off another PC on my
LAN. The network uses DHCP in case it matters!

Cheers!

Peter.

Update... I've just ordered a new CD-ROM. It seemed the easiest option!!
