Is Debian acceptable as a business server?

| I am thinking about using Debian as a domain controller and file/print
server as well as a group application server for Kolab.
Is it any more or less acceptable than Mandr*?

| I guess I should have included that the client machines will be running
M$ Windows XP.
Also, the Server I'll install this on will have RAID hard drives.

Many "Server" projects is derived from Debian, havn't seen one from Mandriva
yet.
So short answer is = YES.

I believe that the word you are looking for is "recommended".
Hint : Just because something is easier to install does not mean it is
superior (though it can be). That statement is as valid within Linux
distros as it is true for OS'es at large.

and?

Well, that'd be a question of consulting the kernel documentation to
make sure there's support, not a matter of distro's, unless you've
managed to find one that's only supported by RHEL through NDI's or the
likes.[vbcol=seagreen]
That would depend on $deity of the one who is to conduct maintenance on it.
essentially, if it works with $distro_1, it'll most likely work with
_any_. it's the ammount of labour you have to put into it to make it
work to your needs, bundled with experience on distro/platform that
should guide your choice.
Having said that - And that I don't have any experience with
Mandr[ake|iva] beond it being a GUI-install - based Desktop -
plug'n'play thing.
What I do know however, is that debian stable is just that. stable.

Both are good and I have used both with good sucess on my home desktops.
If you can spend a little time with both you will find which works for
you. The Debian Package system is a great feature (as long as you stay
with stable repositories.)
I now use MEPIS (Debian) almost exclusively on my home desktops. It is
extremely easy to install and get started. They now have a Beta version of
a SOHO Server version. You may want to give it a try.

Mandrake used to have the "Advanced Extranet Server" project -- a
customised version of Apache. However, little progress has been made on it
lately: http://www.advx.org/. I don't think currently shipping versions of
Mandr(ake|iva) include the AdvX customisations.
It does work very nicely as a server though.
That said, the reason I've just subscribed to this group is that I've just
installed a Debian server on some hardware than Mandrake was having
trouble with (was doing some very odd things with initrd and the megaraid
drivers that lead to kernel panics during boot up).
Debian seems like it will make a good substitute, but we'll see...

Debian is very good as a server, it is stable, well supported, and
non-commercial. However Debian may not have a nice GUI to guide you
through all the setup.
