I wonder if you can help me. I am a complete novice in Linux.and have
installed my first Linux distribution.

I created a partition on my Dell laptop and installed Debian 3.1 on the new
partition. Windows XP Pro is on the other partition.

I installed Debian and everything seemed to be okay. However I then noticed
I had a problem.

My desktop is set at 800x600. I looked through the menu's to find where to
change the resolution of the desktop but
when I did find the correct place 800x600 was the highest resolution
available to me.
I know that my laptop is capable of a resolution a lot higher than this but
it higher resolutions were not available for me to select in Debian Linux,
why is this?

How can I make the resolution of my Debian 3.1 desktop higher that 800x600?

Do I need to redo the whole installation process again? If so do I need to
boot from the DVD disk again or is there a program I can run from within
Debian?

I hope you can help me.

Please could you keep the information & instructions you give me simple as I
may not understand them due to the fact that I haven't used Linux yet.

I appreciate any help or information given.

Thanks!

Neil

It is simply the first workable screen that X finds.

Can you reproduce the contents of your /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 ?

Not at all. This is simply a matter of configuration.

Okay, during the installation, nomally the installer ask you the video card
type, the resolution you want to use etc...

You can reconfigure this :-)

Open a console and identify you as 'root' (administrator) user by typing the
command 'su' (switch user). You can use 'su USERNAME' to switch to user
'USERNAME'. But the user 'USERNAME' must by exist on you're computer.
NOTE : Default 'su' == 'su root' -> To swith to 'root' user.

david@neptune:~$ su
Password:
neptune:/home/david#

Okay, now pay very attention because now you are the KING of you're computer
and you can do or mistake what you will.

I'm considering that you have do the default installation of 'Debian Sarge'
and that you have selected during the install process to install a 'Desktop
environment' and you have NOT personalised the installation of a 'desktop
environment' with chosose 'kdm' and not 'gdm' or that you have install
'Xorg' and not 'xfree86'. But why can difine the tasks to do with the
command 'tasksel'

Look at the config file '/etc/X11/XF86Config-4'
I can sugest to backup (copy) the file now.

cp /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 /etc/X11/XF86Config-4_GOOD_CONFIG

Read the above mentioned file !

Reconfiure with the command :

dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86

Look at the config file '/etc/X11/XF86Config-4' so you can view the
differences. Experiment a little bit with 'dpkg-reconfigure
xserver-xfree86' and try it more than one time to set up perfectly to what
you want.

BTW (By the way) (i have learned recently the word -> BTW)
Debian have so an 'Netinst' ISO image of +-110MB. You burn it on a CD ROM,
boot the computer an can begin install process ! :-) So the CD prepare the
computer and install the minimal of what i needs, at the last, he ask what
task you will do (look at 'tasksel' command) download the needed packages,
and install the whole system :-) It's nice if you have a broadband
connection. But not ideal if you must install a lot's of computers, the
it's better to config a server to mirror the package or some else.

Okay, not a problem but, my english is bad :-( and 'GNU/Linux' is also new
for my :-) But understand my please, 'GNU/Linux' is so complicated because
it's so complexer than other OS that you must pay very much $$$. In most
case, when you are looking for information about some else what you must do
or looking for, read good the information and DONT GIVE UP please !! In
most case, when you begin it's crazy to understand and find somethings you
needs. Step by step, you go faster. Or i must says it; 'error by error, you
learn more about it'. I can understand that there are peoples that are not
happy to read lines and lines informations before beginning. With 'Linux'
you must know a bit more of you're computer than a simple user. That give
you the opportunity to learn much more about it. And that's one of the
goals of 'GNU/Linux' "learn".

I hope this help a little bit. But a last, if you are new, it's a good idea
that you inform you about the 'DDP' (Debian Documentation Project
http://www.debian.org/doc/) and 'TLDP' (The Linux Documentation
http://www.tldp.org/) to have access of tons of informations.
