Why are there so many ISOs?

| Hello all,
I am going to show my ignorance here but when one downloads Mandrake or
Fedora it is (or was) only 4 CDs. I have started the DL of Debian but
its 14 ISOs. Is this right?

You don't need to download all 14 iso's. Download the first one, and
then choose the software you want using apt-get or (by default)
aptitude.
In fact, you only really need the Debian Installer, which was about
110MB last time I looked.
The reason there are 14 CDs is that almost *everything* is available
in a Debian package. Mandrake and Fedora expect you to find your own
..rpms for unusual software; Debian doesn't.

I downloaded and burned all 14, but after performing several installs
of different variations I have never been asked for more than the first
two CD's.
