What's the command to start X in Debian? It is "startx" almost anywhere, or
I installed incorrectly?

Teilhard.

"startx" is part of the "xbase-clients"-Package[1]. I would start with the
"x-window-system"-Package (which depends on xbase-clients) and a
WindowManager of your choice for a minimalistic X.

Thanks a lot. I didn't know you had to install a package to use your
graphical support. I installed Gnome and KDE, and the installer asked me
whether I wanted to start graphical and I answered: "yes", and I was left at
the command line in the end. I really do not know what happened, except that
at certain point I was asked to press return to continue loading packages,
and possibly it was due to the installer failing to install some packages.
Thanks for all the help you have given me so far.

Teilhard.

You just installed two different Desktop Environments. That is actually
not a problem but one of them should be enough, because they occupy
several 100 MB on you HDD.
After answering "yes" for starting the graphical [login] the
installation procedure did install (and maybe start) a so called
"Display Manager" which allows you to login in a graphical environment.
Try "ALT-F7" to get to the X-Terminal or just reboot.

("startx" is now of no use because X is started always)

P.s. Please take a look at these sites. They give you a nice overview of
the X Window System:

Well, actually I was never asked how many graphical environments to install.
The distro, apparently (unless I missed something) installs Gnome and KDE by
default. The problem was that after rebooting I was left at the command
prompt, no Display Manager. And then I didn't know how to start X. My
problem is impatience so I re-installed and I got it all right this time.
Thanks very much for your feedback.
