I've got an old mac - an LC475. I want to use this machine as a backup
box - to mirror my main server. All it needs to run is ssh and rsync.

So far, I have working boot diskettes; I can boot the system using
emile.sf.net and the sarge 2.2.25-mac kernel.

The automatic install bombs, so I am trying to build the file system by
hand. (Since I really need a very limited machine, it's not as bad as
it sounds.)

I have a file system built on the server that I export with nfs. If I
use NFS-root, I can get a shell prompt using the emile-rescue floppy.

If I copy the system over to the hard drive on the mac, and then try to
boot with the sarge 2.2.25mac kernel, I invariably get a failure where
it tries to load init. I can boot into the nfs-root or a ramdisk, and
then mount the local hard drive, so I know that part works....

I'm guessing that I do not have the correct init scripts. I've tried
building my own ramdisk, but frankly I have no idea what I am doing, and
I can't find any howtos that would fit my needs.

Has anyone built a small file system by hand, without using the
installer? Could you please provide some insight into the correct
booting procdure?

Thanks,

I forgot to add that the exact message is:

VFS: Mounted root (ext3 filesystem).
Warning: Cannot open an initial console.

I've googled all over the place, and I have /dev/console set up
correctly, and I've done everything that I can think of....

I've even tried to set init=/bin/bash to eliminate a screwed up
initscripts config...

There is something very basic and simple I am missing....

I've found rootfs tarballs for other architectures; any chance of
someone having a tiny m68k rootfs tarball around that I can use as a base?

When you copied the file system to the hard drive, are you sure the
files in /dev were not copied as plain files? Can you compare the
contents of /bin, /etc, /sbin and /lib between the hard drive and the
nfs-root?

Yow! Now I get to think about all the BAD THINGS I did to a BOWLING
