I downloaded a couple of the CD ISO binaries for Sarge and performed
the installation with just the first two CD's. Everything worked very
well, the sound, video, ethernet and HP Photo printer. I setup a
samba server and apache server for our home network. On the second
story in my den I have my Windows PC and the Debian Sarge PC connected
to the wired ports on the broadband wireless switch/router. My wife
has a Windows PC in the kitchen with a PCI wireless and my daughters
room is in the finished basement with wireless connections from her
Windows PC and XBox.

Sorry I'm getting off the subject. I downloaded the rest of the ISO
images on my Debian PC, which has a DVD/CD Combo burner drive. My plan
was to use this drive to burn the remainder of the CD's. Obviously I
could use my Windows PC to finish the job, but I'm trying to ween
myself off of it.

The burner is on the second IDE as the master (hdc). I have tried
reading through help files and newsgroups, but haven't gotten more than
an error message. The ISO is located at
/home/public/Sarge/debian-31r0a-i386-binary-3.iso. The messages
mention something about an ATAPI driver. My question is what should
the syntax look like or does it not work in this configuration?

Try "cdrecord dev=ATA:1,0,0 -scanbus". If that command recognizes your
drive, you can put "CDR_DEVICE=ATA:1,0,0" in /etc/cdrom/cdrom, and
give the command "cdrecord filename.iso" to burn an iso file.

Well, just to give an alternative, just do
cdrecord -scanbus
Look at the list for your CDRW drive name.
Take the number (the first set with commas in them) as the device. Below I
will assume that number was 1,1,0. If there was a

Eg, from my system there was a line
1,1,0 101) 'PIONEER ' 'DVD-RW DVR-105 ' '1.30' Removable CD-ROM

If above that list there was a line starting with

#Warning: Using ATAPI .....

before the list, then do
cdrecord dev=ATA:1,1,0 name.of.the.iso
or whatever that number was.

Ok I did the cdrecord -scanbus and the results were:

debian1:/home/public/Sarge# cdrecord -scanbus

I tried your form of the scanbus and the results were:

debian1:/home/public/Sarge# cdrecord dev=ATA:1,0,0 -scanbus

scsidev: 'ATA:1,0,0'
devname: 'ATA'
scsibus: 1 target: 0 lun: 0
Warning: Using badly designed ATAPI via /dev/hd* interface.
cdrecord: Read-only file system. Cannot open '/dev/hdc'. Cannot open SCSI
driver.
cdrecord: For possible targets try 'cdrecord -scanbus'.
cdrecord: For possible transport specifiers try 'cdrecord dev=help'.

debian1:/home/public/Sarge#

The drive is a LiteOn DVD +/-R,+/-RW 16x and CD-R/RW 48x burner. It's a new
drive that has been used on an XP system.

cdrecord -scanbus dev=/dev/hdd (your cdrecorder location)
to find correct scsi device number, then
cdrecord dev=ATA:?,?,? -scanbus
edit /etc/default/cdrecord to enable burnfree if you have and just keep:
CDR_DEVICE=cdrw
cdrw=ATA:?,?,? -1 -1 burnfree

then:
cdrecord -prcap
if ok, you may enjoy cdrecord to burn:
cdrecord *.iso speed=???
