USB mess after upgrade

| Hello
I recently installed some upgrades (including, I think newer udev, hal
packages plus gnome that I wanted to try out after months with just KDE) on
my Debian Etch system and have run into a usb problem.
lsusb shows all my usb devices connected to the USB bus. usbview fails
complaining that /proc/bus/usb/devices does not exist. (Never did this
earlier.).
My optical USB mouse for instance appears under /proc/bus/input/devices.
However, it does not work anymore as I think that its listing
under /proc/bus/usb used to be key. My MP3 player - same story. It no
longer gets automounted - instead it fails complaining that /dev/sda is not
formatted or some such nonsense, that too under Gnome. Under KDE, it just
does nothing now.
I have all the usb modules loaded :
$ lsmod | grep "usb"
usb_storage 81600 0
usbhid 38752 0
usbcore 126084 6 usb_storage,nikal,usbhid,ehci_hcd,uhci_h
cd
What is going on, and how do I fix this ?
Thanks.

I think I know what has happened. Two night ago, I was trying to insert my
headphone connector into the laptop slot and accidentally put it into the
USB port right next to it (it was dark). My laptop immediately powered
down. It came up when I booted, but I think I might have shorted out my USB
controller somehow. Is that a plausible explanation ? If so, how do I
confirm that that is what happened ?
