Hello,

what's the best way to make vitual terminals 4 and 5 display
/var/log/syslog and /var/log/mail.log, respectively?
I tried stuff like replacing getty with "tail -f /var/log/syslog" in
/etc/inittab but got broken result (the LOGs would never get displayed
actually).

Have you looked at /etc/syslog.conf? The one that came with my Debian
system includes:

-----------------------------------------
# I like to have messages displayed on the console, but only on a virtual
# console I usually leave idle.
#
#daemon,mail.*;\
# news.=crit;news.=err;news.=notice;\
# *.=debug;*.=info;\
# *.=notice;*.=warn /dev/tty8
-----------------------------------------

Now, you just have to figure out what's going to syslog and mail.log

I think you can direct logging messages to a console or tty by
configuring syslogd using syslog.conf.

man syslog.conf
