Author Hardware reconfiguration for an usb installation

Hi there,
I'd like to have a Linux distribution on my usb disk, but it should be
able to configure automatically as much different hardware as possible.
Is there some package I can install on my Debian Etch to have this
hardware reconfiguration possible, or do I have to install a Knoppix?
Perhaps is there a way to add all of the Knoppix's hardware configuration
techniques to a running Debian installation?
Many thanks for answering.

I should think just installing the 'discover' package should do the
trick. This is the description of the package:

Discover is a hardware identification system based on the
libdiscover2 library. Discover provides a flexible interface that
programs can use to report a wide range of information about the
hardware that is installed on a Linux system. In addition to
reporting information, Discover includes support for doing hardware
detection at boot time.

The full answer probably depends on your hardware. There's probably no
perfect substitute as yet for knowing exactly what hardware you've got
and tweaking the settings manually.

You could try "apt-get discover".

This will replace discover1, which is installed by default by Sarge,
with a newer but potentially buggier version.

hotplug may also be of interest, but there are currently some
dependency conflicts in Unstable that may also appear in Testing.

I think most of the Knoppix techniques are now available in Debian,
but you could try compiling a kernel with a Knoppix configuration.
There used to be some very clear instructions on the Web for doing
this, but I'm sorry to say I can no longer find them. In principle,
you copy /boot/config-foo from Knoppix to /usr/src/linux-foo on the
Debian drive and run "make oldconfig", but the principle may become
complicated in practice.

Do we look as if we have anything else to do? ;-)

Or, *better still*, copy it to /usr/src/linux-foo/.config

Who wrote the misleading rubbish I'm replying to? Sheesh!
