Cannot boot from CD any more

| I have a dual-boot system: XP and Sarge.
GRUB is on the MBR.
It all works well.
BUT - when I try to boot from Ultimate Boot CD for Windows - the machine
goes straight to GRUB - it doesn't say press any key to boot from CD.
What's going on?
What can I do?

1. Check the boot order in your BIOS settings. CD should be first.
2. Try mounting the CD, checking its MD5sum if possible, and reading
files from it. It may be damaged or dirty.
3. Try to boot other CDs in case the CD drive is failing or a cable is
loose.
The problem is certainly with the BIOS or hardware, not either of your
operating systems.

Thanks. It's worse than I thought!
The machine won't even read CDs.
I booted from a Win98 floppy and asked it to boot with CD support and it
reported certain system files corrupted.
Not sure what to do.
May have to wipe the HDD and re-partition.

STOP! As Pete said it is probably not your base OS and "partition".
1) Did you check your bios? have you accidentally turned off CD? Is it
marked as a boot device?
2) Did you install any more devices? Have you tried plugging in a
friends external USB CD device to see if you can read that?
3) have you tried taking it out and refitting it after a quick rub
down?
YOu really dont want to reinstall the OS unless you are quite certain
that all the HW is working flawlessly.

Set your BIOS to boot from CD first.

These are the symptoms of a broken CD drive. Before buying a new one,
try these steps.
1. Check the cables if you haven't already done so. Remove all
attached cables and put them back.
2. Use a lens cleaner disk.
3. Take the drive out and give it a good shake. This may dislodge bits
of pie or other foreign objects.

That won't make any difference to your problem.

Problem solved!
When I installed a second had drive, I moved the data cable to the CD
drive - and it was half out. Pushed firmly in, everything works. Whew!

hey great -- thanks for letting us know all that important information
upfront -- we could've used our Magic-8-ball to come up with a better
answer quicker too....like Unplug your Vacuum cleaner and reset the
Fuse Box
