Debian etch pcmcia HELP!!!!

| OK, gurus, *please* help me out....
I have been completely stymied by what should be a simple task.... Putting
a 2MB flash image on a PCMCIA SRAM card...
The only thing I have with PCMCIA is an older Toshiba laptop. I installed
Debian Etch this morning, because pcmcia under the old OS (FC3) was
completely hosed....
So now at least PCMCIA works. If I plug in a Megahetz network card it is
detected and the drivers are installed.
But if I plug in my SRAM card, the pcmcia subsystem generates the event -
I see a 'pccard inserted in slot 1' message - but that's it.
I am assuming that I am missing the module for the SRAM cards... But I
can't fin dout what module that might be... I've tried ide-cd but that
hasn't made one bit of difference..... The module is loaded but again,
there is no device that I can write to....
So how do I get SRAM cards recognized?
Thanks,

On my machine, some PCMCIA storage cards use SCSI emulation.
Are modules sd_mod and scsi_mod loaded?
Another idea is to boot the machine using Knoppix and check if the
memory card works. If it does, make a note of all the modules loaded and
try these in Debian.
HTH.

Vinay.

An older machine may struggle with Knoppix. Instead, consider using
DamnSmall, which uses the same hardware detection process but will run on
a far less powerful machine. Also in its favour, it still uses a 2.4
series kernel, and at 50 Mb takes a lot less time to download.

Thanks, I know PCMCIA cards were supported using 2.4/pcmcia-cs, so I'll
try DSL.
For some reason, pcmciautils and 2.6 bolixed support for pcmcia mtd...
(Possibly because few use them anymore?)
