| I see that Debian doesn't come with Java on the distribution CD,
What version of Java would be best for being able to run Java apps
like Arachnophilia, Freenet, and Thingamablog?

Debian does not include the Sun JVM for obvious reasons, but it includes
several Free JVMs.

Sun's Java isn't 'free' in the Debian use of the term.

And there is:
java-package - utility for building Java(TM) 2 related Debian packages
This package provides the capability to create a debian package from
a Java(TM) 2 distribution by just running make-jpkg <filename>.
