I just upgraded from sarge to etch. I changed the sources.list file so
that the repositories pointed to testing and then did apt-get update and
apt-get dist-upgrade. After the upgrade I rebooted but had no X-server
screen. I couldn't find xorgconfig or xorgsetup so I decided (for no good
reason to upgrade the kernel to 2.6.15 (the upgrade process hadn't
upgraded the kernel). After that I rebooted and voila, I got a gdm screen.

My next problem was that I had no sound. I knew the system was using oss
instead of alsa when I was running sarge, so I decided to install alsa.
After doing that I ran alsamixer and turned everything on and increased
the volume. I was running Gnome at that time and I still had no sound. I
logged out of Gnome and logged into KDE. I ran the sound configuration
utility in KDE and chose ALSA from the "select audio device" entry. When I
tested the sound, it worked. I then logged back into Gnome, and again, no
sound. I ran alsaconf, and I got sound in Gnome. But then for some reason,
I lost it again.

I did add myself to the audio group. What should I try next?

Also, I noticed that I don't have hardware acceleration. Planet Penguin
Racer runs slow. I checked xorg.conf and I've got the glx and dri modules
loaded in there. How should I go about fixing that?

Thank you in advance for any help...

Well, I have sound. I don't know what I did, but it's working in both
Gnome and KDE. But I still don't have hardware acceleration. How would I
go about fixing that? hardware acceleration worked in sarge.

If you don't say what's your graphic card, noone will be able to help you.
Just a wild guess: you have an nVidia card, you installed the proprietary
driver for the previous kernel, but you forgot to compile and install it
for 2.6.15.

I've had to play around with a few kernels to get hw acceleration
(nvidia). I think I ended up using 2.6.12 with etch. Anyway, double
check the setting in xorg.conf and this page has helped me out a number
of times.
