Up untill a couple of weeks ago I was able to use Konqueror to browse
the filesystem of the host machine on my LAN, including the ability to
copy, paste, delete and edit files on the target system
Now when I try, using the same symlink I was using before, I get
a timeout error:

The host machine is win98SE, which is set up as an Internet Connection
Sharing host, running ZoneAlarm (free version). This connection worked
fine untill a couple of weeks ago and now the debian machine and the
windows machine cannot even see each other over the ethernet connection.
Both machines are using identical NICs and there's been no changes in
settings or installed software

Maybe one of the NICs is broken, or maybe the Win98 machine has a virus.
Have you tried booting either machine on a live CD?

If I had or could burn one I would, but none of my machines will
recognize the only CD-RW available (old boards, No BIOS upgrades
available)
The win machine gets regular anti-malware scans with up to date tools
and has always come up clean. Perhaps I can find an MsDos util that
can fit on a floppy and use it to boot both machines and test NIC's?

Linux with a surprising variety of tools. There are a few machines
that won't boot from it, as it uses a non-standard floppy format, but
not many.

Thanks! That sounds like just the tool I need. I'll check that out
