Author can't connect to camera in Etch running AMD64

I've been using gtkam to connect to my Canon Powershot S110 via usb for
over a year now. I've just done a fresh install of Etch/AMD64 and now I
can't to the camera. Gtkam allows me to select it, but won't talk to it.
And a scan dosen't seem to work - it won't detect the camera.

Kernel.log shows the camera is detected by the usb driver:
Jul 27 17:44:12 localhost kernel: usb 3-2: new full speed USB device
using uhci_hcd and address 2
Jul 27 17:44:12 localhost kernel: usb 3-2: configuration #1 chosen from
1 choice

Any ideas?
